7-Day Jackson to Bozeman Road Trip Itinerary: Best Stops & Tips

highlights on a roadtrip from jackson to bozeman

A popular summer vacation is to fly into Jackson Hole, WY and fly out of Bozeman, MT or vice versa! This is a great way to experience the area since there is so much to see between Jackson, Grand Teton National Park, Yellowstone National Park, and Bozeman.

This route takes you through some of the most stunning landscapes in the West, from the geothermal wonders of Yellowstone to the towering peaks of the Tetons. Along the way, you’ll find scenic hiking trails, wildlife viewing opportunities, and historic mountain towns worth exploring. Whether you’re looking for adventure or a laid-back road trip, this itinerary highlights the best stops between Jackson and Bozeman.

Here are some of our recommendations, but feel free to swap any activities that better suit you and your group!

Day 1 – Arrive and Explore Downtown Jackson Hole

downtown jackson

Jackson Hole Airport is located in Grand Teton National Park, making it one of the most beautiful airports in the world! You can either rent a car directly from the airport or take a complimentary shuttle to a car rental office in town.

Check into your hotel and hit the town! From restaurants, to shopping, to art galleries, there is plenty to do in downtown. Make sure to also take your picture in the famous antler arches at the town square.

Day 2 – Jackson Hole Tram and Horseback Riding

The tram is located at Jackson Hole Mountain Resort and takes you 4,000 ft up to the top of the ski resort. Grab a waffle from the Famous Corbet’s Cabin and enjoy the views. Hot air balloon rides are another popular activity nearby.

Grab some lunch and get ready for your afternoon activity: horseback riding. From Teton views to mountain streams, exploring the area on horseback is the perfect western experience.

Day 3 – Half day Grand Teton and Snake River Float

Sunrise and sunset are the best times to see wildlife in the summer. Take a Sunrise Wildlife Tour with Teton Tour Guides as they drive you around the park looking for wildlife and sharing information on the local history, wildlife and more.

By now it is time to cool off with an afternoon Snake River Scenic Float. Two and half hours on the Iconic Snake River is the perfect way to cap off your time in Jackson Hole and Grand Teton National Park!

Day 4 – Yellowstone Lower Loop

Yellowstone is a huge park with so much to see! We recommend taking at least two days, starting with the lower loop. In the lower loop you’ll see Old Faithful Geyser, Grand Prismatic Spring, the Grand Canyon of Yellowstone and more.

Stay in Canyon Village and get ready for day two in Yellowstone!

Day 5 – Yellowstone Upper Loop

On your second day on Yellowstone, explore the upper loop as you slowly make your way north towards Bozeman. Along the way you’ll see Norris Geyser Basin, Tower Junction, Mammoth Hot Springs and more. Lamar Valley is another great place to visit, arguably one of the best spots for wildlife in Yellowstone.

Day 6 – Big Sky or Gardiner, MT

There are two ways to get to Bozeman from the upper loop of Yellowstone, either through Gardiner or Big Sky. Gardiner is a charming historic town, while the Big Sky route goes through West Yellowstone and follows the Gallatin River. Choose one and come back the following year to try the other!

Day 7 – Explore Downtown Bozeman and Depart

By now you have arrived in Bozeman and have experienced a full week of mountains, rivers, and wildlife. Take an easy day strolling through downtown before departing for home. If you are looking to extend your trip, Glacier National Park in northern Montana, or the Black Hills in South Dakota are also great options!

Whichever route and activities you choose, remember to have fun and take breaks, after all you are on vacation!
