Bears in Jackson Hole and a Tribute to Bear 399

bear in jackson hole

Because of its central location to both Yellowstone and Grand Teton National Park, Jackson Hole is a hub for wildlife viewing, including one of the region’s most iconic members: bears. This area is home to two main species of bears: the black bear and the grizzly bear. Each species plays a crucial role in the ecosystem, and understanding their habitats, behaviors, conservation efforts and more, enriches the possible sighting for many visitors.

Habitat of Bears in Jackson Hole

  • Forrests: Thick conifer and mixed forests provide great cover and feeding opportunities, including berries which is a main food source for bears.
  • Meadows: Meadows are important habitats for bears in the spring and summer, where they roam for various plants to forage.
  • Riparian Zones: Rivers and streams are also great sources of food for bears and a place too cool off in the heat of summer.

Grizzlies tend to prefer more open areas such as meadows and river valleys, whereas black bears usually stay in the dense forests.

Behaviors of Bears

Grizzly Bears and Black bears have mostly similar behaviors with a few key differences.

Similar Behaviors:

  • Foraging: A large part of any wild animal’s survival is finding food. Both grizzly bears and black bears feed on plants, nuts, berries, and other animals.
  • Hibernation: Both bear species hibernate from late fall to early spring, although black bears usually emerge earlier in the spring than grizzly bears.
  • Difference Behaviors: Grizzlies are typically more aggressive than black bears when provoked or protecting their young, whereas black bears are more curious but also more skittish.

Conservation Efforts and Challenges for Bears in Wyoming

Conservation efforts for bears in Jackson Hole have gained momentum over the years, resulting in a constant evolution. In the early days of the national park system, it was common for people to feed bears from their cars. This all changed once life threatening bear attacks began to occur. From there the National Park Service and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service worked hard to mitigate human-bear conflict while also working on habitat preservation and monitoring populations.

However, challenges remain. Climate change and urban development cause habitat loss. Bears are also threatened by illegal hunting and road accidents. Educating the public on responsible wildlife viewing and bear safety is essential to the coexistence of these wild animals.

Best Spots for Bear Sightings

For those hoping to responsibly catch a glimpse of these magnificent creatures, there are several prime locations in the area.

A Tribute to Bear 399

Bear 399 is arguably the most iconic bear in the Great Yellowstone Ecosystem. She was first collared in 2006 and has been monitored ever since. Part of her popularity is because she had 18 cubs over her life with several litters and two, three and four cubs. In the spring of 2020, she emerged with four cubs in tow, surprising many that had followed her life thus far.

She often stayed close to populated areas and roadways to protect her cubs from predators, thus being in the spotlight for many visitors to see. Over the years she had become a symbol for the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem and conservation efforts, many naming her “the Queen of the Tetons.”

In October of 2024, 399 passed away from a car collision in the Snake River Canyon. Many believe in the symbolism of her and life and subsequent death, as it relates to the triumph and challenges all wildlife face. She was returned to Pilgrim Creek in Grand Teton National park, where she spent much of her life. Her cub, Spirit, survived and will live on with her legacy of a bear that meant so much to so many.
